A 3-hour evidence-informed course to strengthen GLD outcomes for 3–4-year-olds

Course Overview

This 3-hour course brings together industry specialists to strengthen early years practitioner skills using the SHINE framework to respond to the 5 domains that most influence Good Level of Development in EYFS (Reception):
• social and emotional development
• home learning environment
• independence and self-care
• early maths
• early literacy

The course includes practical tools, evidence-based strategies, and real classroom examples suitable for nurseries, PVIs, childminders and school nursery teams.

Learning objectives

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  1. Support children’s social and emotional development using Montessori-based approaches and activities to develop emotional vocabulary.

  2. Strengthen the home learning environment using conversational tools, and simple parent partnership strategies.

  3. Build independence and self-care skills, including supporting toileting, dressing, routines and confidence.

  4. Apply evidence-based strategies to improve early numeracy, drawing on early maths research.

  5. Embed phonics and early literacy foundations

  6. Identify and respond to complex needs in the early years.

  7. Understand essential early years safeguarding principles.

  8. Leave with a clear plan of practice changes to support GLD improvement in their setting.

1. Introduction – 10 minutes

  • Welcome and course overview

  • Overview of the SHINE framework and today’s agenda

2. Social and emotional development – 20 minutes

  • Emotional literacy teaching using The Colour Monster

  • Montessori approaches to co-regulation and self-control

  • Social problem-solving for 3–4s

  • Creating a calm, ordered environment for emotional stability

3. Home learning and high-quality interactions – 20 minutes

  • How to strengthen talk, reading and shared play at home

  • Supporting parents with simple, high-impact routines

  • EEF recommendations for boosting language outcomes

4. Independence and self-care – 20 minutes

  • Building independence through choice, routine and environment

  • Toileting confidence: supporting late toilet training

  • Practical life skills: pouring, dressing, tidying

5. Numeracy and numerical Patterns – 40 minutes

  • Number sense development (subitising, counting, comparing)

  • Pattern recognition and reasoning

  • How to create a maths-rich environment

  • Turning daily routines into maths opportunities

  • Modelling maths talk for 3–4s

6. Early literacy, language and communication – 40 minutes

  • Phase 1 foundations: sound discrimination, rhythm and rhyme

  • Fred Talk demonstration

  • Creating literacy-rich environments

7. Complex needs – 10 minutes
Early identification of SEND and SEMH concerns

  • Inclusive practice that supports GLD
